Work · Barista Plus Coffee

A coffee roaster's store, built from scratch.

Barista Plus roasts green coffee in house in Dallas and packs it the day it is roasted. Will, who owns the business, needed somewhere to sell it that could handle twelve coffees, three sizes, nine grinds, subscriptions and wholesale without turning into a part-time job.

The Barista Plus Coffee home page, showing coffee beans in a roaster drum and the headline We roast it. That's the difference.

A note on what this page does not say. The store has not opened to the public yet, so there are no sales, traffic or conversion figures here. Every number below measures the build, not the business. When the store has been live long enough to say something true about results, we will add it.

What we built

Eight things, one store.

The storefront

Home, shop, 12 product pages, six origin pages, subscribe, wholesale, mission, contact and cart. A custom theme, not a bought one.

A catalog that holds itself together

12 coffees, each in three sizes and nine grinds. That is 324 combinations, all driven by real Shopify data rather than hardcoded into the design, so adding a coffee does not mean editing code.

Find My Roast

A short quiz that suggests a coffee, with alternates. It does not ask for an email first, because the point is to help someone choose, not to trade the answer for an address.

Subscriptions

Pick a cadence, save on every order, skip or pause or cancel without emailing anyone. If no plan is live yet, the page says so plainly instead of pretending.

Wholesale enquiries

A form that asks a cafe the things a roaster actually needs: monthly volume by product line, brew type, equipment. Not a second storefront, which is what was asked for and what was built.

English and Spanish

A switcher in the header, and every line of custom copy read from a translation file rather than typed into the page. 796 translation keys.

Real shipping

Live UPS rates calculated from the actual packed weight of each bag size, plus local pickup with a written policy.

Reviews, from buyers only

Anyone can read them. Only someone who actually ordered can write one.

Two screens

The finder, and a phone.

How we work, in practice

Four decisions from this build.

Anyone can list features. These are the judgement calls, including one of our own mistakes.

We found the product copy writing a cheque the software would not cash

The product pages promised every review comes from a real order. The reviews app, out of the box, let anyone post one, and it has no setting to require a verified buyer. We could have quietly deleted the sentence. Instead we built the behaviour the sentence described, using the app's own purchase-verified email path plus a fail-safe in the theme, so the promise became true.

We removed a button rather than fake it

A "Write a review" button turned out to belong to a dead code path. Making it work meant calling a private API that could break without warning. We took the button out and said so, rather than leave something on the page that looks like it works.

The shipping quotes were built on a sample box

Rates were being calculated from Shopify's generic example package, not from what a bag of coffee actually weighs. We asked for the real packed weights and rebuilt the rates on those, so a customer is quoted what shipping costs rather than what a placeholder costs.

A fix of ours broke phones, and the scanner caught it before anyone saw it

An early mobile change closed a breakpoint too soon and dropped every phone wider than 381 pixels onto the desktop layout. An automated check caught it and it was fixed the same session. We mention it because the interesting part is not that we made a mistake, it is that something was watching for it.

Measured, not estimated

What we can prove today.

Build-quality measurements taken from the store itself. Not business results, which do not exist yet.

Barista Plus is on a monthly care plan, so the store stays maintained after launch rather than being handed over and forgotten. The code is theirs. So is the domain, the store and every account attached to it. Published with Barista Plus's written permission.
